Academic Integrity at Illoura College

At Illoura College, academic integrity means being honest, responsible and ethical in your learning and assessments. It means the work you submit must be your own and must show your own knowledge, skills, understanding and effort.

Academic integrity is an important part of studying at Illoura College. It helps ensure that all students are assessed fairly and that qualifications issued by Illoura College are respected and trusted. Illoura College is committed to maintaining academic integrity and ensuring that all assessment evidence submitted by students is genuine.

Why Academic Integrity Is Important

Academic integrity protects the value of your qualification. When you complete your own work, you demonstrate that you have gained the skills and knowledge required for your course and future employment.

Academic integrity is important because it:

  • supports fair assessment for all students;
  • confirms that students have personally achieved the required skills and knowledge;
  • protects the reputation of students and Illoura College;
  • supports industry confidence in Illoura College qualifications;
  • helps students prepare for workplace expectations;
  • reduces the risk of academic misconduct and disciplinary action.

Submitting work that is copied, purchased, completed by someone else, or generated by artificial intelligence without permission may mean the assessment is not a true reflection of the student’s competence.

What Is Academic Misconduct?

Academic misconduct is any behaviour that gives a student an unfair advantage or misrepresents their own learning. Illoura College considers academic misconduct a serious breach of academic integrity.

Academic misconduct may include:

  • plagiarism;
  • cheating;
  • copying another student’s work;
  • collusion or unauthorised collaboration;
  • contract cheating or ghost-writing;
  • impersonation;
  • fabrication or misrepresentation of information;
  • inappropriate or unauthorised use of artificial intelligence tools;
  • sharing, buying or selling assessment answers or learning materials.

Plagiarism occurs when a student uses another person’s words, ideas, information or work without proper acknowledgement. This may include copying from websites, books, articles, other students, online sources or previously submitted work. Plagiarism may be intentional or accidental, but it is still considered academic misconduct.

Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools

Illoura College recognises that artificial intelligence tools can support learning when used responsibly. AI may assist students with understanding concepts, brainstorming ideas, clarifying terminology, improving grammar or conducting general background research. However, AI must not replace genuine learning, independent thinking or the student’s own demonstration of knowledge and skills.

Students must not use AI tools to complete assessment tasks unless this is clearly allowed in the assessment instructions. Submitting AI-generated content as your own work, or using AI in a way that misrepresents your own knowledge, skills or competence, is not permitted.

Students are responsible for checking the accuracy of any information they use and must follow assessment instructions about referencing, citation and disclosure of AI use.

How Illoura College Checks Academic Integrity

Illoura College has systems in place to help maintain academic integrity and verify that student assessment work is genuine.

Assessment submissions may be reviewed by trainers and assessors and may also be checked using Turnitin. Turnitin assists Illoura College to identify possible plagiarism, similarity issues, and potential use of artificial intelligence in submitted work. The use of Turnitin supports fair and consistent review of assessment submissions and helps protect the integrity of Illoura College qualifications.

A Turnitin report does not automatically mean that academic misconduct has occurred. Where concerns are identified, the submission may be reviewed by the assessor to consider the context, including referencing, quotations, common terminology, assessment requirements and the student’s previous work.

Illoura College’s Academic Integrity Policy confirms that Turnitin may be used to screen assessment submissions for AI-generated text and plagiarism, and that submissions with a similarity score above the acceptable threshold may require further manual review.

How Academic Misconduct Can Affect Students

Academic misconduct can have serious consequences. Depending on the nature and seriousness of the matter, a student may be required to resubmit an assessment, receive a Not Yet Competent outcome, attend counselling about academic honesty, receive a formal warning, or face further disciplinary action.

Repeated or serious academic misconduct may lead to cancellation of enrolment. Illoura College’s Academic Integrity Policy states that a first offence may result in a formal written warning, counselling and a remedial penalty such as resubmission or a Not Yet Competent grade. A second offence may result in a recommendation to cancel the student’s enrolment.

Academic misconduct can also affect a student’s course progress. If assessment work is not accepted as genuine, the student may not be able to complete required units, progress through the course, meet placement requirements or complete their qualification on time.

Impact on International Students

International students must maintain their enrolment, course progress and visa conditions while studying in Australia. Academic misconduct may affect an international student if it results in failed assessments, delayed course progress, suspension or cancellation of enrolment.

If academic misconduct leads to enrolment cancellation, this may affect the student’s visa. Illoura College’s Academic Integrity Policy states that where cancellation is recommended following repeated misconduct, the student will receive a Notice of Intention to Cancel Enrolment and will be advised of the potential impact on their visa status.

International students should understand that academic integrity is not only an academic requirement. It may also affect their ability to continue studying in Australia if misconduct leads to enrolment cancellation or failure to maintain satisfactory course progress.

How Students Can Maintain Academic Integrity

Students can protect themselves by understanding assessment instructions before starting their work and asking for help if they are unsure about what is allowed.

Students should:

  • complete their own assessment work;
  • keep drafts, notes and research records as evidence of their own work;
  • correctly reference all sources used;
  • avoid sharing completed assessments with other students;
  • only collaborate when group work is clearly allowed;
  • use AI tools only where permitted;
  • disclose AI assistance where required;
  • check their work before submission;
  • seek support early if they are having difficulty with an assessment.

Illoura College provides guidance to students about academic integrity, including expectations around research, writing, referencing and responsible use of AI tools.
