Access and Inclusion

Illoura College is committed to providing a welcoming, respectful and inclusive learning environment where every student has a fair opportunity to access, participate in and complete their education and training.

An Inclusive Learning Environment

We recognise that students come from diverse cultural, linguistic, educational, religious and personal backgrounds and may have different abilities, responsibilities and support needs.

Illoura College aims to remove unreasonable barriers to participation and ensure students are treated fairly, respectfully and without unlawful discrimination, harassment, bullying or victimisation.

Illoura College is committed to:

  • providing fair and equitable access to training and assessment;
  • respecting cultural, religious, linguistic and individual differences;
  • supporting students with disability or additional learning needs;
  • providing reasonable adjustment where appropriate;
  • identifying and responding to barriers affecting participation;
  • using inclusive learning materials and teaching practices;
  • maintaining an environment free from discrimination, harassment and bullying;
  • protecting students’ privacy, dignity and confidentiality; and
  • referring students to appropriate support services where required.

Access and inclusion support may assist students who:

  • have a disability, injury or health condition;
  • experience mental health or wellbeing concerns;
  • have a learning difficulty or neurodivergent condition;
  • require Language, Literacy, Numeracy or Digital support;
  • have limited English language skills;
  • have caring or family responsibilities;
  • are experiencing temporary medical or personal circumstances;
  • require cultural or religious consideration;
  • are returning to study after an extended period;
  • experience difficulty accessing facilities, equipment or digital systems; or
  • face another barrier affecting participation in training or assessment.

Students do not need to wait until a concern becomes serious before requesting support.

Reasonable adjustment means changing how training or assessment is accessed or conducted so that a student can participate on an equal basis.

Possible Adjustments

  • accessible learning materials;
  • additional assessment time;
  • rest breaks;
  • approved assistive technology;
  • accessible rooms or seating;
  • verbal clarification of instructions;
  • reader, scribe or support person where appropriate;
  • alternative assessment arrangements;
  • adjusted scheduling; and
  • additional trainer guidance.

Competency Requirements

Reasonable adjustment does not reduce the required standard of competency, remove essential course requirements or provide an unfair advantage.

Students must still demonstrate the required skills, knowledge and performance specified in the relevant training product.

Illoura College will consult with the student and may consider:

  • the student’s individual circumstances;
  • the nature of the disability, condition or support need;
  • information provided by the student or a relevant professional;
  • the essential requirements of the course or unit;
  • work health and safety obligations;
  • the effect of the proposed adjustment on the student and others;
  • available facilities, resources and technology; and
  • whether the proposed adjustment is reasonable and practical.

Supporting documentation may be requested, such as a medical certificate, practitioner recommendation or accessibility plan.

An adjustment may not be approved where it would:

  • remove an essential competency requirement;
  • compromise the integrity of the qualification or assessment;
  • create an unacceptable health or safety risk;
  • cause unjustifiable hardship;
  • breach a legal, licensing or regulatory requirement; or
  • fundamentally change the nature of the course.

Where a requested adjustment cannot be provided, the College will discuss other reasonable options with the student where available.

Students may receive assistance with:

  • speaking and listening;
  • reading and understanding written information;
  • writing and numeracy;
  • using computers and online systems;
  • accessing Moodle and digital learning resources; and
  • understanding learning and assessment instructions.

Support may include additional explanation, learning resources, practice activities, digital assistance, adjusted learning strategies or specialist referral.

Students may discuss reasonable needs relating to:

  • religious observance and prayer requirements;
  • cultural practices and cultural safety;
  • dietary requirements;
  • clothing or personal presentation;
  • gender-sensitive arrangements; and
  • significant cultural or religious events.

Requests will be considered fairly while taking into account course requirements, safety obligations, timetables and available resources.

Students who experience difficulty accessing a classroom, workshop, kitchen, equipment, online platform or learning material should contact the College early.

  • accessible rooms or entry points;
  • suitable seating or equipment;
  • digital or enlarged learning materials;
  • Moodle access assistance;
  • information in a clearer or alternative format;
  • accessible amenities; or
  • another reasonable method of participation.

Illoura College does not tolerate unlawful discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, bullying, vilification or victimisation.

A student who experiences or witnesses inappropriate conduct should report the matter to a trainer, Student Support Officer or reception staff.

Where there is an immediate threat to safety, call 000.

Information provided when requesting support will be treated respectfully and as confidentially as reasonably possible.

Information may be shared where:

  • required or authorised by law;
  • necessary to protect a student or another person from serious harm;
  • required to meet regulatory obligations; or
  • necessary to manage a serious health or safety risk.

A student may raise a complaint where they believe they have:

  • experienced discrimination, bullying or harassment;
  • not been treated fairly;
  • been denied reasonable adjustment without proper consideration;
  • not received appropriate access to support;
  • had their privacy handled inappropriately; or
  • been disadvantaged because they requested assistance.

Students may appeal a decision relating to reasonable adjustment, access arrangements or another matter affecting participation. Students will not be disadvantaged for raising a concern in good faith.
